Private Valentine: Reviews, Part 1

Jessica Simpson, Private Valentine

And so, as with other movies, Private Valentine has had its mix of mixed reviews. Here are some of them, that would either discourage or encourage you to watch this most recent addition to Jessica Simpson’s filmography:

Real Movie: Private Valentine: Blonde and Dangerous is an almost identical remake to the 1979 Goldie Hawn film Private Benjamin. Private Valentine is a film that is almost completely carried by the support cast. Vivica A. Fox, Cheri Oteri and Ryan Sypek from television’s Wild Fire and who plays Sgt. Mills Evans, Megan’s love interest, lead a more believable and interesting cast than anything found in the Megan Valentine character. Jessica Simpson’s voice, for some obnoxious reason, is constantly squeaking in the film, while she is generally a spoiled rotten starlet. Sort of art imitating life as Jessica Simpson was often portrayed in a similar manner in her reality television series Newlyweds with ex-husband Nick Lachey. There is very little redeeming in the Megan character, sure there are a few moments and as expected she is seen excelling beyond expectation but her annoying characteristics outweigh the good. It seems as if the filmmakers believed that a smile and a wink in the end of the film would over shadow any and all ill will felt toward what is essentially an overtly annoying popcorn film.

DVD Talk: It’s not that I harbor any ill will toward Simpson and her acting career. After all, she seems pleasant enough and quite capable of commanding a crowd, unlike many performers today. My irritation arrives with the dopey material she selects for herself, watching as she hits the same comedic beats over and over. The ditz routine has run dry for Simpson and her platinum force-field-like hair, and “Valentine” is a 100-minute-long reminder on how the actress either needs to seek out a severe challenge for herself or give up on the movie dream altogether.
