Jessica Simpson’s dad Joe talks about the many “interesting” roles Jessica has been offered over the years:

She’s always been herself on camera, but Jessica Simpson isn’t ready to show all of herself on camera.

“The last script that came to us was for Jessica to be a porn star,” Jessica’s father and manager, Joe Simpson, told PEOPLE at Thursday’s ABC Television Critics Association party in Beverly Hills.

“We were promised we would win an Oscar with that,” says Simpson, 49. “I was like, ‘Eh, we’ll just buy a [statue of a] little man and keep our clothes on.’ ”

Since she shot to fame in 2003 with ex-husband Nick Lachey on MTV’s Newlyweds Jessica Simpson, 27, has been receiving quirky TV-show proposals “every day,” according to her father.

“We’re pitched those a lot,” he says. “There are a lot of cool ones, and a lot of really strange ones.”

Currently, Papa Simpson is promoting ABC’s fall series The Women’s Murder Club, which he is producing with Rush Hour director Brett Ratner. No plans are underway for Jessica or her younger sister Ashlee Simpson, 22, to appear on the show.

“They’re very busy, and they’re happy,” Joe Simpson says of his daughters. “Jessica has three more movies to shoot; she has a new record coming in September. If the right role came up, of course, we’d never turn that down.”

After debuting her eponymous swimwear collection, Jessica Simpson hosted a party in the Redroom at the Shore Club’s Skybar. My Miami party spies tell me the vixen—surrounded by bodyguards—refused to answer any questions without her mother, Tina, present. (Isn’t that the polar opposite of Britney Spears?!) With sis Ashlee a no-show, Jess controlled the spotlight, looking amazing and making guys jealous by focusing all her flirtations on mane man Ken Paves.

Yesterday we reported that Ashlee Simpson may be engaged to Pete Wentz. But now it looks like she could be more than just engaged…

The National Ledger has reported that Ashlee may be carrying Pete Wentz’ spawn - the rumors began when Ashlee was seen continually rubbing her belly. The report also notes that at a family wedding on 7-7-07 (they skipped the Paris wedding of Eva and Tony to stay at home with the family) sparked rumors that she might in fact be pregnant. “Ashlee may have helped start the rumors herself…She was at a family wedding and was wandering around rubbing her belly. And she refused to drink anything.”

Ok, poor Ashlee Simpson has rumors flying everywhere at the moment about her. Here’s another one. She might be engaged to Pete Wentz!

Nothing’s been confirmed, so hold off on having your head explode for now, but sources tell Pop Crunch that Wentz proposed to Simpson backstage at Live Earth before he performed with his Fall Out Boy bandmates. “Ashlee wasn’t expecting it at all; it was a total surprise,” says the source. “Pete whipped out a big engagement ring, dropped down on one knee and asked Ashlee to be his bride. Ashlee says it was romantic, sexy - and that she said ‘yes’ right away.”

“Ashlee and Pete are desperate to keep the engagement quiet for as long as they can so they can make wedding plans in peace,” says a pal of Ashlee’s. “All she wants is a simple ceremony with her family, his family and a handful of people.”

Are Jessica Simpson and Lane Garrison more than just friends? Just Jared would have you think so, but don’t be too quick to believe ALL the celebrity gossip you read.

Truth is, Jess and Lane grew up together. At age seventeen, Lane left his parent’s rule and moved in with the Simpson clan - Joe and Tina took him in. From that perspective, Jess and Lane are practically siblings. (Of course, the same thing happened with Ryan Cabrera, and that didn’t stop Ashlee from sinking her teeth into him.)

Ashlee was recently photographed leaving the recording studio, where she was working on her upcoming album. Her sister, Jessica Simpson, was at the record plant with Ashlee (I suppose for moral support).

What I don’t get: how do the paparazzi know they’re there? Did they follow them in and then hunker down for the evening until the pair came out? Did they just happen by the studio and wait to see if any celebs came out? What is the deal with paparazzi being EVERYWHERE, ALL THE TIME?

Paparazzi photographed Ashlee Simpson looking stylish as she left a medical building in Beverely Hills yesterday, but I’m not sure I agree with her sense of “style.” Tube socks up to her knees? A purse that looks like a Glad trash bag?

Looks like both Jess and Ash need a professional stylist.

Jessica Simpson is reportedly jealous of younger sister Ashlee.

The ‘Employee of the Month’ actress is said to be unhappy her sibling’s fame is beginning to eclipse her own.

A source told Closer magazine: “Jessica finds it tough being compared with Ashlee, who’s becoming a big star and is threatening to overtake Jessica as the more successful sister.

“Jessica was always seen as the bigger star, but now Ashlee is taking over. There’s certainly a sibling rivalry between them.”

Ashlee Simpson has long fielded gossip that her dramatic new look is the result of plastic surgery (sources tell PEOPLE she had a nose job last April), but she doesn’t care, she says in a new interview. “I don’t get bothered by people saying what they say,” the singer, 22, tells Harper’s Bazaar in its May issue. “I’m a happy person, and I’m happy with my looks.”

And while she doesn’t talk specifically about how she’s changed her appearance, she emphasizes that any little fixes were not acts of self-loathing. “I loved how I looked,” she says. “I’m not an insecure person, nor was I before.” Going under the knife, she says, is “a personal choice. I believe if somebody chooses to do plastic surgery, it [should be] for yourself, not for anyone else.”

Jessica Simpson is doing her best Angelina Jolie by confessing that she wants babies – she just doesn’t want to make one herself, yet.

So what’s getting Jessica in the mothering mood? Her dogs, at least according to the New York Post’s Cindy Adams. But the pop princess, whose been cavorting all over America with boyfriend John Mayer, isn’t quite ready to pump out little Jesses. She’s going to get herself, as Adams puts it so delicately, “another designer kid.”

Creepy daddy Joe Simpson has gone on record claiming his daughters will never end up in rehab like fellow has-been Britney Spears.

Joe — father, manager, origin of all future therapy bills of celebri-thingys Jessica and Ashlee Simpson — has spoken out on Britney’s recent personal and professional woes, which have culminated in a rehab stint, the World Entertainment News Network reports.

While feeling empathy for Brit, Joe believes his daughters would never follow the same toxic path as Spears.

He says, “I would never let that happen to my daughters. Hopefully, her family will take care of the situation.”

Jessica Simpson has been spotted driving her dog, Daisy, around Los Angeles. This is the same dog that Nick gave her onstage as a gift a few years ago (Daisy was a puppy at that time).

Ashlee Simpson has waged a devastating underhanded attack on her sister Jessica, claiming she’s prettier than her!

The cosmetically enhanced poplette has declared in a newspaper interview that she’s more attractive than Jessica because her body is better proportioned.

She tells the Daily Record: “I’m taller than she is and my legs are longer than hers. I got lucky because my chest size isn’t completely massive.”

Double Grammy winner John Mayer was in a gregarious mood on Sunday night (February 11), where he and his fans congregated in a pink-hued outdoor cabana at the Sony/BMG post-Grammy party at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

The most enthusiastic buzz occurred when Mayer excitedly greeted girlfriend Jessica Simpson, now a brunette, with a bear hug and lip lock, as daddy Joe and sister Ashlee watched. But the excited buzz wasn’t over the liplock. It was over Daddy Joe’s ability to not interfere, the way he did when Jess and Nick were together.
